Burgass Carrier Bags was established in 1976 by Mr Chris Burgass in Nottingham, UK.

Starting as a simple wholesale business in modest premises, it initially focused on buying and selling unprinted paper and polythene bags. As demand for custom-printed bags grew, Burgass Carrier Bags acquired its first overprinting machinery, marking the beginning of their bespoke designed carrier bag production.

The beginning of the 1980s saw the need for additional machinery and larger premises to house it all. This was an exciting time, as Burgass embarked on manufacturing bags, using its first ever converting machines, and printing using far superior flexographic presses.

In 1993, Burgass relocated to its current factory in Beeston, Nottingham. The increased space allowed for further investment in machinery and the expansion of a dedicated, skilled printing team.

During the mid-to-late 2000s, Burgass heavily invested in equipment and staff to manufacture paper carrier bags. Over the next 15 years, they emerged as a leading UK manufacturer of printed paper carrier bags.

Responding to growing environmental concerns over polythene bags, Burgass discontinued its polythene bag production in 2024, shifting its focus entirely to paper carrier bags made from recycled FSCĀ® certified paper, which is fully recyclable.

While many of the UK’s paper carrier bags are imported, contributing to significant costs and higher carbon footprints, Burgass remains one of the few UK-based paper bag printers and manufacturers, taking pride in their ability to meet the rising demand with both the machinery and skilled workforce able to create bags for this ever-increasing market.
